Each month, Ripple sells more and more XRP to traders to raise money and to keep the price afloat. While this centralizes the cryptocurrency, it does greatly reduce the carbon-footprint of the currency. The US Securities and Exchange Commission has, since December 2020, been battling Ripple for, it alleges, holding unregistered securities sales. In contrast, XRP is pre-mined. Before its launch, 100 billion XRP tokens were already minted. A large portion of these coins was locked by Ripple in an escrow to be released at one billion per month. Upon release, Ripple sells as much as it needs in order to raise funds and then puts the unsold tokens into a new escrow.
